Romance Novels and Mental Health
Reading has always been an escape for me, as romance novels were always my go-to choice as they guaranteed a happy ending. I don’t want to watch a film or read a book that doesn’t end happily. This does somewhat limit my choices, but I want to be lifted up, not dragged down.

This month’s top picks from my kindle library are a rollicking Vegas wedding romcom, a steamy romance with a scorching hot firefighter, and a magical and glorious love story between a police officer and a six foot three woman who keeps getting into too much trouble courtesy of her wayward grandfather. Oh. My. God. This month I had my heart, imagination, soul and libido handed to me on a plate courtesy of some absolutely epic reads. I love it when I start reading a book and right from the beginning I know I’m in safe hands but about to be taken on the ride of my life. I’ve got a second chance love triangle romance, a glorious alien romance, and a reverse age gap trope survivalist love story for you.
What are Instagram edits?
If you’ve been scrolling through the bookstaverse on Instagram, you will have invariably come across ‘edits’. These are collages of images that allude to elements, scenes and characters in a story. Usually made by fans, they can also be created by authors, and are a wonderful way to create a mood and add visual context to the book they reference.

I’ve been a huge fan of Kayley Loring for a while now, and her latest book - Good Vibrations - takes the title and runs with it. It’s got singing vibes, surfing vibes, beach vibes, and a scene with a vibe that will make you extremely hot under the collar, all set against the backdrop of Alice in Wonderland (the musical). This month I was researching rom coms with illustrated covers, and discovered stories that will make you snort-laugh, tear up, and get all hot and bothered. Annika Martin, Olivia Spring, and Natasha Boyd are incredible indie authors at the top of their game. They’ve produced page-turning corkers that are brilliantly written and phenomenally edited. Reading them was an absolute delight and I loved every second. This time I’m going leftfield, with three books that are gloriously bonkers in very particular ways. ‘Early Riser’ takes place in an alternate reality, where each perilous winter, most of the earth’s population hibernates, ‘The Rearranged Life of Oona Lockhart’, shows us what happens when, every New Year’s Eve, Oona is transported to a different year of her life, moving backwards and forwards through time, and in ‘Bonk’, we learn about the real and surreal world of sex and science.
